Best AI Agent Skills for Java and Spring Boot (2026)

Ask a coding agent to add an endpoint to a Spring Boot service and there's a decent chance you get field injection, a @Autowired annotation on a mutable field, a controller that catches Exception, and a test that starts the entire application context to assert one string. All of it compiles. All of it passes review at a shop that isn't paying attention. None of it is how the Spring team has recommended writing Spring since roughly 2016.

That gap is what a skill closes. It's a markdown file the agent reads before it touches your code, holding the conventions your team would otherwise repeat in every pull request.

Here's the uncomfortable part of the current state: the Java-specific shelf in the skills directory is thin. Three packages, none of them enormous. Star counts are from the source repositories. The 272K figure on the Superpowers entries is the count for the whole framework, not the individual skill, which is worth knowing before you read it as popularity.

The three Java-specific packages

Spring Boot Skills by rrezartprebreza is the closest thing to a purpose-built option. MIT licensed, free, and aimed at exactly the failure modes in the opening paragraph: constructor injection over field injection, layered architecture, sane exception handling. It sits at 213 stars and is marked unreviewed in our directory, which means read the markdown yourself before you install it. That's a five-minute job for a skill package and it's the whole audit.

Cursor Rules Java by jabrena is broader and more opinionated: a collection of skills and agents for enterprise Java workflows, Apache-2.0, and compatible with Claude Code, Cursor, and VS Code Copilot rather than a single harness. At 425 stars it's the most-starred Java-specific entry in the directory. If your team works across more than one agent, portability alone makes it the better default.

Quarkus MCP Server from Quarkiverse is a different animal. It isn't a skill that helps you write Java; it's a Quarkus extension that lets you expose your own service as an MCP server. Useful if you want an internal system callable by an agent, irrelevant if you're writing a REST API and want better code out of it. It appears on Java skill listings a lot, usually without that distinction being made.

The IDE bridge, and why it matters more for Java

MCP JetBrains is maintained by JetBrains and connects the agent to a running IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm, or Android Studio instance. For most languages this is a convenience. For Java it's closer to a requirement, because so much of what makes a Spring codebase navigable lives in the IDE's index rather than in the files: bean wiring, JPA entity relationships, generated sources, what actually implements an interface across a multi-module Maven build.

The skills that do the heavy lifting

This is the part most listings skip because the skills aren't Java-branded.

Test-Driven Development enforces red-green-refactor. GitHub MCP, official and at 32.2K stars, brings issues and pull requests into the session. Sentry MCP, official from Sentry with roughly 18,000 recorded installs, lets the agent query the production error you're actually chasing rather than a description of it you typed from memory.

Before you install anything

Skill packages are executable instructions and MCP servers are running processes on your machine, so the trust question is real. Three checks, in order.
