An accountant friend who runs a 4-person bookkeeping practice in Surabaya told me she went from 11 hours per client per month to 4 in the last six months. The change wasn't a new ERP. It was three Claude Code skills wired into her existing Excel and PDF workflow. Reconciliation, invoice OCR, and quarterly close prep all shifted to Claude doing 80% of the prep and her reviewing the result.

This guide covers the agent skills that pay off for accountants in 2026: what they do, how to install them, what to watch on accuracy, and the workflow patterns that get results.

Why skills (not just ChatGPT)

Accountants who tried generic ChatGPT for bookkeeping work got mixed results because the model couldn't reliably touch files, run formulas, or persist context. Claude Code skills fix this. A skill is a packaged set of instructions plus tools (file readers, scripts, schema rules) that Claude loads when it sees a relevant task. The model gets specialized knowledge plus the ability to act on files in your folder, without you copy-pasting between a chat and a spreadsheet.

For accounting, this means Claude can: open the xlsx, fix the formula, dedupe the entries, save the file. Then move to the next one. No copy-paste between a chat window and a spreadsheet.

Quick verdict

  • xlsx-spreadsheet: install first, single highest payoff for daily spreadsheet work
  • pdf-tools: install second, handles invoice OCR and bank statement parsing
  • docx-word: install if you write engagement letters, audit reports, or partner memos
  • awesome-finance-skills: bundle worth exploring once the basics are stable

These are all installable from Anthropic's official skills marketplace or community plugin sources.

1. xlsx-spreadsheet: the foundation skill

The xlsx skill is the one to install before anything else. It lets Claude read, write, and modify Excel files directly. Not by converting to CSV (which strips formulas, formatting, and multi-sheet structure), but by working with the .xlsx XML schema itself.

What it handles well:

  • Reading multi-sheet workbooks and computing across them
  • Writing formulas (not just values) into cells, with proper relative/absolute references
  • Building pivot tables programmatically
  • Conditional formatting setup (red for variance > 5%, etc.)
  • Charts and named ranges
  • Reconciling two ledgers against each other and producing a variance worksheet

Where it's weak: macros and VBA. The skill works with the document, not with the macro engine. If your workflow depends on Excel macros, you still run them manually after Claude finishes.

Real workflow: monthly reconciliation

My friend's monthly close has Claude pull the bank statement CSV, the QuickBooks export xlsx, and reconcile them side by side. She types:

> Reconcile the bank statement in bank-april.csv against qbo-export-april.xlsx. Flag any transactions that don't match. Output a reconciliation-april.xlsx with three sheets: matched, bank-only, ledger-only.

For a small client with 80-120 monthly transactions, this used to take her 45 minutes. Claude finishes in 90 seconds, and she spends 5-10 minutes reviewing the bank-only and ledger-only sheets for missing entries.

2. pdf-tools: invoice OCR and statement parsing

The pdf-tools skill handles two recurring accountant pain points: extracting line items from invoices, and parsing bank statements that vendors send as PDF instead of CSV.

It uses Tesseract for OCR plus rule-based table extraction for structured PDFs. Quality varies by source: scanned receipts from a phone camera get maybe 92% accuracy, machine-generated PDF invoices from QuickBooks get 99%+. Always review the output for tax line items and account codes before posting.

/plugin install pdf-tools@skills

Real workflow: invoice batch processing

A common task: vendor sends 23 PDF invoices for the month, none of them in your accounting system. With pdf-tools installed:

> Read all PDFs in invoices/april/. Extract vendor name, invoice number, date, line items, totals, and tax amount. Output to invoices-april.xlsx with one row per invoice. Flag any where the line items don't sum to the total.

Claude processes the folder, builds the spreadsheet, and you upload that to your accounting system instead of manually keying 23 invoices.

Accuracy note: I've seen the skill misread vendor codes that use unusual fonts on receipts. Always spot-check the first few rows of an import before bulk-posting to the ledger.

3. docx-word: engagement letters and reports

The docx skill matters for accountants who produce written deliverables: engagement letters, audit summaries, management letters, financial analysis memos. Word documents are still the standard for partner-signed deliverables.

What it handles:

  • Reading existing Word docs while preserving formatting
  • Filling templates with client-specific data
  • Inserting tables generated from spreadsheet data
  • Track-changes awareness (it won't accidentally accept all changes)
  • Headers/footers/page numbers per firm standard

/plugin install docx-word@skills

Real workflow: engagement letter generation

> Open engagement-letter-template.docx. Fill in the client name as 'PT Wijaya Mandiri', engagement scope as 'monthly bookkeeping plus quarterly tax compliance', fee as 'IDR 4,500,000/month', and start date '01 June 2026'. Save as engagement-letter-wijaya.docx.

It's not glamorous, but a firm generating 8-12 engagement letters a month is saving an hour per letter cumulative.

4. awesome-finance-skills: a finance-focused bundle

The awesome-finance-skills bundle aggregates community-built skills for financial work specifically. It includes routines for valuation modeling, DCF templates, ratio analysis, and trend-spotting in monthly P&Ls.

The quality varies. Some skills in the bundle are well-maintained, others are abandonware. Before adding any to your stack, check the last commit date on the source repo and read the SKILL.md to understand what tools it wraps.

Install

/plugin marketplace add nowork-studio/awesome-finance-skills
/plugin install awesome-finance-skills@awesome-finance-skills

Useful for analysts and partners doing valuation work. Less useful for day-to-day bookkeepers.

A typical accountant's stack

For a solo practitioner or small bookkeeping firm in 2026:

1. xlsx-spreadsheet: daily use, every client 2. pdf-tools: daily use for invoice and statement intake 3. docx-word: weekly use for deliverables 4. awesome-finance-skills: situational, mostly for analysis engagements

Add Claude Code itself ($20/mo for the Pro plan), and your tooling cost is the subscription. The skills themselves are free.

Security considerations

Accounting work involves client financial data, which is regulated almost everywhere. Before running a skill on client files:

  • Read the SKILL.md to understand what tools the skill uses. Does it send data to external APIs? Many official Anthropic skills are local-only, but community skills sometimes call third-party services for OCR or data enrichment.
  • Check your engagement letters for any clauses about third-party data processors. If you use Claude Code with the Anthropic API, that's a sub-processor your clients may need to be notified about.
  • For tax-sensitive data, prefer skills that work fully locally. xlsx-spreadsheet and docx-word both operate on local files without external API calls beyond the core Claude API itself.
  • Never paste client SSNs, tax IDs, or login credentials directly into Claude. Reference them by file location or redact before processing.

What doesn't work yet

A few areas where the skills aren't there yet in 2026:

  • Direct integration with QuickBooks Online or Xero APIs. Possible to script, but no off-the-shelf skill handles auth and entity matching reliably enough to trust unsupervised
  • Multi-currency reconciliation with FX rate lookup. Partial support, but you'll still verify rates manually for material amounts
  • Audit sampling and sample selection per AICPA standards. Generic skills can do random sampling, but nothing currently encodes the audit firm methodology well enough to replace the work

These will likely close in the next 12-18 months. For now, the time savings come from the prep work, not the judgment work.

FAQ

Do I need to know how to code to use these skills? No. You install with one command and interact in plain English. The skill handles the technical side. You'll get more out of it if you understand what a spreadsheet formula or a Python script roughly does, but you don't need to write code.

Are these skills accurate enough for tax returns? For data preparation and extraction, yes, with review. For final tax positions, judgment, and filings, no. Treat the skills as a paraprofessional doing data entry; you still review and sign off.

Can I share skills with my team? Yes. Skills install at the user level by default but can also live in a project's .claude/skills/ folder, which means you commit them to the firm's shared repo and everyone on the team gets the same setup.

What if a skill makes a mistake? Review before posting. Claude Code shows you every file change and every tool call before executing, so you can approve, reject, or edit. Don't run skills in auto-approval mode on financial data until you've watched the same skill do the same task correctly 20+ times.

Is this safe for SOC 2 environments? It depends on your SOC 2 controls and your client's data classification. The skills themselves are open code you can audit. The Anthropic API has SOC 2 certifications. Verify with your security team if you're working on regulated data.
